Does Shopify have a built-in backup?

The short answer

No. Shopify has no built-in backup that returns a store to an earlier state: what it documents instead is CSV exports and theme file downloads, both of which you have to remember to take. There is no button in the Shopify admin that returns your store to how it was yesterday. Shopify keeps the platform running and its own infrastructure redundant, which is a different job from keeping a copy of your catalogue as it was before your import went wrong.

You can check this yourself in five seconds: delete a test product in the admin and look for the undo. There is none.

What you do get

CSV exports of products, customers and orders. Theme downloads and theme duplication. Order and product timelines that record some changes. These are real tools and worth using - they are simply not a point-in-time restore of a store.

Why the difference matters

Most store disasters are not platform outages. They are a supplier feed with the wrong column mapping, an app with a bug, a bulk edit applied to the wrong filter, or a person who deleted the right thing in the wrong store. Redundant infrastructure faithfully replicates all of those. Only a versioned copy outside the store can undo them.

What to do about it

Export before bulk edits, duplicate themes before editing, and install something that keeps versions and can put one back.
